If you truly think that you won’t need more than two bays, any of the options above is fine, with a slight nod to the DS723+. I’m also a big fan of the DS224+, though it isn’t nearly as expandable as the DS723+ is. With that said, it’s a great option for people looking for a basic NAS and has a great chance of being on sale for Black Friday 2023.
Please keep in mind that if you want redundancy, you’re stuck with RAID 1 or buying an expansion unit (which costs enough to warrant buying a NAS with more drive bays up-front). Keep in mind that an expansion unit is only an option with the DS723+.
From a functionality perspective, I’d stay away from the DS223 outside of very unique circumstances. 2GB of memory (without the option to upgrade) is very limiting, but for specific scenarios, it’s a great option.

If your budget allows, the DS923+ is the four-bay NAS you should purchase and should be on sale for Black Friday 2023. However, it’s important to mention that you cannot use Hardware Transcoding. If you do, the DS923+ does not support it, so purchase the DS423+ instead.
Another important point to note is that you can expand the DS923+ to nine total drives if you add a DX517 expansion unit.

The DS1522+ is the new guy on the block and has an AMD Ryzen R1600 processor and was on sale last year for Black Friday. Compared to the DS1520+ that this device replaces, it’s better in almost every way. The one downside in comparison to the DS1520+ (which came with an Intel Celeron processor) is that this processor does not support hardware transcoding (if you intend on using it with Plex or another media streaming application).
If that’s important to you, check out the DS423+ above. If it’s not important and you want an extra drive-bay, this is a great device.

We finally have a difference! The Ryzen processor boosts better performance across the board and the DS1621+ supports ECC memory, but it’s normally not on sale for Black Friday (we’ll see if it is this year). Not only that, you can upgrade that memory to 32GB if you’d like, which is something that’s not possible for any of the other devices we’ve looked at. The power supply is also contained inside the device (which is generally of higher quality).
You can also add 10GbE to this device through the PCIe expansion bay, which isn’t possible with the other smaller bay units. If you’re talking purely hardware, this is the “best” one to get, with the “smallest” total drive bays. The only downside is the Intel processor in the cheaper devices will be better for video hardware transcoding.

The DS1821+ is practically identical to the DS1621+, but comes with two additional drive bays really hoping that it’s on sale for Black Friday this year. If you’re in the market for an eight-bay unit, this is the one you want to purchase.
Synology DS1621xs+
I left this for last since it’s overkill for 99% of people who are looking to purchase a consumer NAS and there’s almost no chance it’ll be on sale for Black Friday. Plus, this falls more into the “prosumer/enthusiast” category, but if you check out any of the tutorials on this site, you might have bigger plans for your NAS so a more powerful device might be desirable.

This is the most “powerful” consumer/prosumer NAS you can purchase in desktop form. The biggest draw is 10GbE support out of the box, but this can be added to either the DS1621+ or DS1821+ models for a reasonable price. Overall, it’s hard to recommend this model, but if you “need to have the best” and don’t want to go with a rack-mounted model, this is the one.

It’s very important to purchase the correct hard drives for your new NAS. Since NAS devices run 24/7, you need to ensure that you purchase equipment that’s reliable. There are two hard drives on sale right now for Black Friday:
Seagate IronWolf
For Black Friday, the Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS Hard Drive is on sale for $139.99 and the Seagate IronWolf 12TB NAS Hard Drive is on sale for $199.99. These hard drive comes with a 3-year warranty, is 7200 RPM, and has 256MB of Cache.
Western Digital Red Pro
If you’re looking for a better overall hard drive with a longer warranty (5 total years), the Western Digital Red Pro 14TB NAS Hard Drive is on sale for $259.99. It has the same speed as the IronWolf Drives above (7200 RPM), but double the cache (512MB).
10GbE, SSD Cache, and Memory for Synology NAS Devices
The Synology NAS devices above all come standard with a core set of hardware but are missing a few important features that you can upgrade.
10GbE Networking Equipment
If you’re interested in increasing the network performance to 10GbE, you’ll have to purchase an E10G22-T1-Mini (for the Synology DS923+ and DS1522+), or an E10G18-T1 PCIe device for the Synology DS1621+ or DS1821+ and I’m hoping it’ll be on sale for Black Friday this year.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to increase your core networking to 10GbE as well, but this is a great way to improve the network transfer speeds of your new Synology NAS.
NVMe SSD Cache Drives
Another great option is to purchase NVMe SSD drives for SSD caching. If you’re interested in increasing the network transfer speeds (without being able to maximize the throughput with hard drives alone), you can look into using a read/write SSD cache in RAID 1.
Not only can this increase the performance of network transfers, but you can and will get better performance for operations local to the NAS (like virtual machines).
The SNV3400-400G is a Synology NVMe Drive designed for SSD caching in Synology NAS devices, but you can use any NVMe SSD Cache drive you’d like.
